Good to hear.  We have been running the preload option since last Friday and like you it barely adds any additional time to user login.  We did however have one VM crash the other day, but its been the only one.

Re: nfs3 and nfs4.1 datastore woes

I'm seeing the same issue with NFSv4.1 and no, I'm not mounting the share as both v3 and v4.1  I can have two separate shares, one v3 and one v4.1 and VMWare barfs every time on Storage VMotion or P2V to the 4.1  Version 3 works flawlessly.

Things I have tried:

  • Reduce NFS queue depth..
  • Drop NFSv4.1 to 1 IP address and wire (no session trunking)
  • Set server NFS file locking to insecure
  • Increased timeouts, on everything NFS.

It fails 95% of the time and leaves the shell folder on the destination share with the VMX file, an empty VMSD and 3 log files.  No VMDK files.

I've tried different servers with different kernel versions (Ubuntu 14.04 and 16.04 and Kernels 4.2.2 and 4.4.0 respectively) and the result is the same.

The log file is always the same:

Custom Inventory Report

Being generally new to PowerCLI, I've tried the "Frankenstein" approach to create a report that provides what we're looking for without success.

Running ESXi 5.5

Based on the Hosts & Clusters view we have the following:

One Cluster

Several "Level 1" Resource Pools each of which contain:

          Reource Pools

               sub-Resource Pools

          vApps

               sub-Resource Pools

Each vApp has Notes that need to be included in the report.

Problem: 1) I cannot get a proper hierarchy listing of Resource Pools and vApps (vm,...,root resource pool) 2) I cannot find how to pull vApp notes

Thanks for your help...

The vmware tools images are to be found under:

CDS Repository

Note that the problem you are seeing is when the installer tries to uninstall your old version of VMware Workstation. So if you want to download the .msi file for the above linux tools then you have to look under the OLD currently installed version of VMware Workstation, not under VMware Workstation 12.

Another alternative is to manually remove VMware Workstation see also:

Migration of BitLocker encrypted CVDs

$

Hi!

I'm currently testing a scenario where I'm going to migrate an encrypted CVD with Windows 7 Enterprise to Windows 10 Pro.

  • The CVD is a notebook running Sophos Safeguard and is encrypted with BitLocker
  • The Baselayer for Windows 10 Pro has been created on a VM and has also Sophos Safeguard installed, but it's not encrypted (referring to KB2081607)

When I start the migration, everything gets validated successfully and the Baselayer will be downloaded and applied to the notebook.

After some time Mirage wants me to restart the computer to continue the migration (which is perfectly fine so far) but instead of starting correctly, I get the following:

  1. Splash Screen Windows 7
  2. Mirage message "preparing system... 0% -> 100%"
  3. Splash Screen Windows 10
  4. Preparing Devices
  5. "Interactive sign-in process initialization has failed. Please check the event log for details."
  6. The computer shuts down automatically
  7. Everytime I try to boot the computer now ends up in Windows 10 shutting down automatically after its splash screen

Am I missing out on something? Is there any successfully done and documented migration?

Can anyone please help me with this or is anyone else having this issue?

Thanks in advance and best regeards

Re: Unable to Increase Thin Provisioned Disk Size

... but does that mean it's running via a Snapshot?

Yes, that's definitely the case with the file name, and the behavior you mentioned.

Anyway,"Consolidate", or  "Delete"/"Delete All" from the Snapshot Manager will merge the changed blocks from the snapshot(s) into the base disk's .vmdk file(s), i.e. the VM's current state will remain the same.

Prior to deleting the snapshot, please ensure that there's sufficient free disk space on the datastore. Depending on the data in the snapshot, your base disk(s) might grow! If you are unsure, provide details about the files and their sizes in the VM's folder as well as the amount of free disk space on the datastore (please refresh the datastore usage to get the currently available free disk space).

Vcenter and ESxi License upgrade issue

$

Hi Team,

I have some queries about the vCenter and Esxi license Upgrade.

We have an existing environment which has a vCenter and 3 Esxi host running on version 5.0. This environment is using for view horizon.

Now we planned to set up new environment for view horizon  and we deployed vCenter and Esxi hosts with version 6 but the evaluation period has been expired. So what we planned  is the take the license key from existing environment and upgrade it to V6 then apply to new environment. My questions are,

  1. If we upgrade, will it affect the existing environment, I mean the hosts will disconnect from vcenter or the vcenter features will get deactivated or something will happen ?
  2. Also please tell what will happen to the existing environment if we upgrade the license key.

Regards,

Ranjith.

Horizon 7 swapping windows on multi-monitors on first reconnect

$

Strange problem with Horizon 7.0.1 and Windows 7. In a multi-monitor environment if I disconnect and then reconnect, windows that were on the right move to the left and windows that were on the left move to the right.  If I then disconnect and reconnect again the windows don't move.  It only swaps them on the first disconnect/reconnect. This happens when using both PCoIP and Blast but not RDP.  I've tested from various client types and the problem is across them all.

The problem does not occur in View 6.2.

I'm aware of the following article but the symptoms are not the same:

Re: script to take host in maintenance mode with defined error message or auto maintenance mode

The following example will create an alarm that is fired by 2 triggers, a Host warning or a Host IP changed.

You can of course change these triggers, they just server as examples.

If either of these triggers fires the alarm, the action will place the host in maintenance mode.

The alarm is defined on a datacenter (but you can change that)

$dcName="MyDatacenter"

$alarmMgr=Get-ViewAlarmManager

$entity=Get-Datacenter$dcName|Get-View

On Windows 10 you have PowerShell 5, that could be the reason.

Hi msschmitt

I will try to reproduce your problem, at the same time. could you please to provide your log files to me?

  • For Fusion UI bug like Fusion UI crashing, incorrect UI display, below files need to be provided
    • Fusion UI log: ~/Library/Logs/VMware Fusion/vmware-vmfusion.log
    • vmx log: <VM bundle>/ vmware.log
For example, if your VM is named ‘A.vmwarevm’ and is saved in ~/Documents/Virtual Machines/ folder, then you should be able find the vmx log in below path:
      ~/Documents/Virtual Machines/A.vmwarevm/vmware.log

Thanks and Regards

Re: vcenter SSO - AD LDAP login problems

Hi there,

there is no mention of any problems with other systems using domain credentials when one is turned off.

But interesting thing is (as we did further testing) in seperate environment. I made two new domain controllers (also win 2012) set them as identity source in (seperate/test) vcenter which is also version 5.5 .

I set one as primary, other as secondary (also same network) .

When both are turned on - Authentication works okay.

When primary is turned off - Authentication hangs for very long (sometimes 2-3 minutes) then sometimes login is successful but vsphere web GUI does not load completely (only basic frames) , sometimes there is timeout and no login at all ! When i turn it on again everything loads normally.

Another colleague tested in his environment (vcenter 6)

When both are turned on - Auth works okay

When primary is turned off - Authentication hangs for about 40-60 seconds and login is succesfull.

Is there maybe any information if this is some kind of bug in vcenter 5.5 ?

Thank you

join domain and software component in same machine impossible?

$

Hey all,

i'm going in circles for months now on this with vRA 7.0.1 ... i'm desperate, VMware support does not know what to look at either. Maybe someone here managed to do something that should be very simple ...

we deploy machines into different VLANs (each service their own). There is no DHCP in those VLANs. I think this is standard setup in every enterprise. All those machines get static IP from vRA and need to join the domain.

if I use vSphere guest customization then domain jojn sometimes fails (guest OS customization timeout). sometimes the NIC is not connected when it tries to join domain. it fails. timeout after 2 hours

VMware KB says flat out VRA+static+domain-join it is not possible, use guest agent script: Cannot join a virtual machine to a domain when using vSphere and VMware vRealize Automation Network Profiles to assign s…

This works perfectly fine if its a bare infra machine. However ... as soon as I add a software component to this blueprint (no matter what content, example install IIS) the guest script to join the domain runs a 2nd time (why???) and this causes failure of course, deployment is torn down.

I thought I was smart and just modified my script to do error checking (if it ran before then just don't join domain again) but the software component (install IIS) never runs. its stuck in status "waiting"

it seems this was never tested. I can't reliably deploy machines that join domain using vRA provided IP and add software components .. i could scream ...

anyone?

Hi ,

I have vCloud Director 8.1 installed.

A new catalog created, and can add iso's without any problem to vm's.

I have also uploaded a flp file to attach to a vm, however the option to add the flp to the vm is not available.

Properties-Hardware of a VM says

CD/DVD drive: Empty

Floppy Drive: Empty

Can attach an iso by right clicking the vm, but no othe r media option avilable.

Is there an option I need to turn on?

thanks
