Linked Clones Prevalence in vSphere

Just wondering why linked clones are not exposed in vSphere UI ? I know we can make them from the API but why are they hidden in this product but visible as UI options in others? Is it simply because they were deemed more suitable to VDI (VMWare View) and the like?

Enforce Deploy Thick VM from thin template

Guys, i like keeping my templates thin as they:

  • take up less space
  • deploy quickly
  • vMotion quickly if need be

That said, I often want VMs deployed form these template to be thick. Is there an automated way of enforcing this? I'm thinking currently the only way to do this is with orchestration via PowerCLI or VCO. Is there anything that could be set natively to enforce this? I know we can select this in the deployment wizard but my team asked me this anyways ....

Hi Andre

Thanks for the clue. Looks like it was a hard restart.

From the idrac log:

PWR2262: The Intel Management Engine has reported an internal system error.

2018-07-26T18:59:29-0500

Log Sequence Number: 447

Detailed Description:

The Intel Management Engine is unable to utilize the PECI over DMI facility.

Recommended Action:

Look for the PWR2264 "normal system operation" message in the Lifecycle Log after the PWR2262 entry. It may take 30 seconds for the message to be logged. If the PWR2264 message does not appear, do the following: Disconnect power from the server and reconnect power. Turn on the server. If the issue persists, contact your service provider.

CPU0000: Internal error has occurred check for additional logs.

2018-07-26T18:59:30-0500

Log Sequence Number: 448

Detailed Description:

System event log and OS logs may indicate the source of the error.

Recommended Action:

Review System Event Log and Operating System Logs. These logs can help the user identify the possible issue that is producing the problem.

Detailed Description:

Requested system hardreset.

Recommended Action:

No response action is required.

Well, that may be more for a Dell forum to figure out what this means, except for the message saying"Review System Event Log and Operating System Logs". So, as for Operating system logs. Is the vmkernel log it, or should I post syslog.log as well?

Content Library 6.5 Mounted .ISO and replication

Guys, like most people I was excited by content libraries announcement in 6.0 but when I looked into it I saw:

  1. Could not mount a .ISO from a content library to a VM
  2. Could not replicate vSphere templates to a content library (could do .OVFs but who does that for their in house VMs ! ?)

Anyways, i see in 6.5 that 1 has been addressed. Now, this got me thinking. Consider the following scenario:

  • I setup a content library on DataCentreA and have DataCentreB syncing from it
  • I put My.ISO file on the CL
  • It replicates to DataCentreB
  • I mount it to a VM in DataCentreB
  • I delete it from DataCentreA

What happens when DataCentreB syncs ? Since the .ISO is mounted to we have a problem ?

I logged in just to say thanks, your belated post got me out of an 11pm hole with a corrupted /store partition on a 6.5 ESXi host that had to be back up and running before morning.

I couldn't see anything in /store on another host in the same cluster that looked host-specific so I just scp'ed the contents across from one to the other before rebooting the host and all was right with the world.

Thanks again for making the effort to post it here, welder314

It turns out there is a known issue in Horizon Agent 7.4.0 which is why we couldn't get this to work. We are still running 7.4.0 on our connection servers but upgraded the Horizon Agent on the physical to 7.5.0 and now it's working. We actually were able to connect using Blast (We use Mac remotely so RDP is not supported) but anyone at the console of the physical PC can see what is happening and control the session. I'm still working with VMware to determine if this is expected.

Odd my move to parallels removed the keyboard issue for myself. In Fusion a linux VM was almost unusable when the Touch Bar was enabled. Key bounce happened every time that the bar either dimmed or turned off. Given the no acknowledgement of when the complete issue would be addressed i simply needed to move. Cost me some $$ but far less frustration of looking up to see the last 10 lines of code have duplicated letters everywhere.

Can a PowerCLI script display a prompt on a Guest OS?

So I'm writing a script to reboot all the VM's in a folder.  Very simple, no big deal.  What I'd like to know though is if there's a way in PowerCLI to put a prompt on the machines that they're being rebooted and somehow have a timer so a user can save any data if necessary and if perhaps they click ok it starts the reboot sooner and if not once the timer has counted down it reboots.  Is that possible using the Invoke-VM command or do I need to do something else?

OK

I see references to scsi devices naa.6d0946601f70d30022186609290abb0c and naa.6d0946601f70d300228215fee13a5b8c in both the vmkernel.log and in the syslog.log shortly before the restart.

These are the 2 virtual disks created by the dell RAID card on the host and presented to VMWARE as raw storage. Could it be something going on with them? idrac says the virtual disks are healthy. They are what the 2 VMware datastores are built on.

a small portion of the syslog is attached. the reboot happens close to the beginning. right after the 2018-07-26T18:55:02Z log entry

No, it does not need to be disabled.

Disable HA when upgrading vCenter (vCenter Server Appliance)/ESXi hosts

Hi there,

Can somebody confirm HA has to be disabled during an upgrade of vCenter & ESXi hosts (at cluster level, uncheck "Turn on vSphere HA")?  Looking to upgrade from 5.5 to 6.5U1

Thanks,

TT
